Programme Overview
UNIDIR’s Space Security Programme focuses on building knowledge and awareness of the challenges and global security implications related to the space domain. The Graduate Professional will contribute to research, policy analysis, and capacity-building efforts aimed at enhancing international cooperation and governance in space security.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of Programme, the Graduate Professional will:
- Conduct background research on national policies related to space security to support the development of the Space Security Portal.
- Assist in updating and digitizing the Space Security Lexicon.
- Support the planning and implementation of programme activities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, and field missions, with a focus on UNIDIR’s flagship Outer Space Security Conference.
- Contribute to day-to-day tasks, including communication, coordination, and administrative matters.
- Perform other tasks as required by programme staff.
Key Skills and Interests
- Expertise in space security, space law, space policy, or related fields.
- Ability to undertake independent research on issues related to space security and space law.
- Proficiency in synthesizing information into concise, high-quality written briefs.
- Strong organizational and coordination skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills (both written and oral).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and InDesign.
- Interest in international peace and security, disarmament, gender issues, and the work of the UN.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
- Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
- Graduated with a university degree (second university degree or equivalent) and, if selected, must commence the Graduate Professional Programme within one year of graduation.
Work Experience:
- Professional work experience is not required; however, demonstrated experience or interest in space issues, disarmament, or international security will be considered an asset.
- Proficiency in standard software applications, including Microsoft Office and graphic design tools (e.g., InDesign).
- Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
- Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Languages:
- Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
- Knowledge of at least one other official UN language is desirable.
